New Hope Housing to Host Two Tuition-Free Bezos Academy Preschools

Apr 11, 2024

HOUSTON (April 11, 2023) — New Hope Housing, a leading provider of affordable Housing + Services, has announced an agreement with Bezos Academy to open two tuition-free, Montessori-inspired preschools.

The preschools will be located onsite at affordable housing developments and located in community-centric buildings. Bezos Academy Houston – Northside will be located at NHH Berry (8855 McGallion Road), a community serving families and individuals with limited incomes. Bezos Academy Houston – Third Ward will be located at NHH Gray (2604 Gray Street), a community serving senior adults aged 55 and older with limited incomes. This announcement marks an expansion of Bezos Academy and New Hope Housing’s partnership – the two organizations worked together to open Bezos Academy Houston – Southside, located at NHH Reed, which opened in September 2023.

“Affordable housing and education are the keys to unlocking the potential of our communities,” said Joy Horak-Brown, President and CEO of New Hope Housing. “By 2026, three Bezos Academy preschools will serve our communities across Houston, providing essential support to hundreds of cost-burdened families who lack access to quality, affordable preschool. We can’t wait to join Bezos Academy in nurturing a new generation of creative leaders and lifelong learners.”

“Opening Bezos Academy preschools in affordable housing communities is a game-changer for parents who are juggling the complexities of childcare and work,” stated Mike George, President of Bezos Academy. “Thanks to partners like New Hope Housing and the Houston Housing Authority, we are on-track to open six tuition-free preschools in the Houston area in the coming years, creating opportunities for 340 children aged three and four to thrive.”

Bezos Academy covers operating expenses for its preschools at no cost to eligible families, providing everything the children need during the day, including meals and educational materials. The preschools’ Montessori-inspired approach is designed to meet every child where they are, and to help them learn and grow at their own pace. The organization hires, trains, develops, and pays talented educators, and provides everything that the children need during their day, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

Families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level (about $125,000 per year for a family of four) with children aged three to four will be eligible to apply. Once the opening date is set, more information and an application for the lottery-based selection process will be posted at
